Natural materials assessment

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species

CITES is highly relevant for the fragrance industry in its choice and sourcing of natural materials

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species

Addressing the sourcing of natural materials

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), is critical for IFRA due to the potential risks facing natural materials used in the fragrance industry.

In collaboration with an external consultant and the International Society of Perfumer Creators (ISPC), IFRA assessed natural ingredients for CITES-related threats. This process identified four high-risk materials, now prioritized for IFRA’s 2025 work program.

The focus will be on analyzing supply chains and identifying intervention points to mitigate the risk of these materials being CITES-listed.
